Earlier this year, our blog highlighted how your company can prepare for the ISDN/PSTN switch off ahead of 2025. Yet despite this early warning, a recent report has indicated that a lot of UK businesses still need to catch up.
BT announced the upcoming change in 2015, but yet 1 in every 5 businesses are still using landlines rather than cloud based technologies.
Early VOIP adopters are already reaping the benefits of a fully integrated voice system, and there is still time before the big switch off to start making your enquiries if you haven’t changed over yet.
Whilst we know that the pandemic forced lots of businesses to catch on to remote working faster than they would like, many businesses opted for Microsoft Teams and other methods of communication like using mobile phones, rather than completely replacing them with VOIP.
What does this mean?
Essentially, this means that come 2025, those businesses who haven’t made the leap to VOIP yet, might find themselves in a bit of a pickle.
In the report, the Chairman of National Business Communications says “Businesses need to start preparing for the switch off now. We anticipate a hold-up in 2025 due to unprepared businesses, which may mean the industry won’t be able to keep up with the number of last-minute orders, possibly leaving businesses without a service.”
The big switch off will mean that all PTSN (Public switched telephone networks) and ISDN (Integrated services digital networks) will be switched off. This means that all businesses need to start acting now to switch over to IP networks, eventually creating a fully digital network.
Interestingly, the report also highlights that 4% of businesses are still not sure which communications option they will be using once their legacy phones are turned off.
